Ick, Capitalism

March 4, 2008

Everytime I hear about some big company acquiring some other one, I feel like the little baby that was just force-fed the  gerber stringed-beens that are absolutely disgusting.  Ick, Capitalism.  WAAAAA!!!!

According to this article that just came out today, Microsoft and Yahoo could become one.  I hate it when companies acquire and merge, stifling creativity and ideas and beauty.  Such a union could make some very ugly babies (by babies, I mean new programs and engines and stuff).  Where we once had 2 groups working hard to compete for our approval, we now have a larger, lazier company that is more secure in it’s economic position.  Monopolistic security for a company is bad.

I don’t know… collaboration usually makes for something bigger and better… I’m no genius, but Microsoft is like computer software stuff and Yahoo is mainly web searching. I’m in a graphic design studio and we’re currently working on an interdisciplinary project with architects and interior designers… all of us have different strenghts and all of us can learn a few things through this thought called “synergy”. wordd?

Collaboration is great; I wish Microsoft’s acquisition of Yahoo would lead to such a situation. However, what does Microsoft have to gain from keeping Yahoo alive? A business will always seek to gain more profit–yes, Microsoft may keep some of Yahoo’s resources, but what you fail to realize is that competition is what drives the race to create better technology and more efficient software(and by the way, Microsoft has its hands in far more than simply “computer software and stuff”).
Think of the Cold War. An arms race (which is in essence a security competition between states) has yielded some of the best thinkers, technology, and weapons in a very short amount of time. This is the Realist way of describing improvement and advancement. “Synergy” and “Collaboration”–which are all well and good–are more important in Communist systems. In a Capitalist system, we don’t COLLABORATE, we USE.

If you want to see why Yahoo being bought out is bad, I suggest you check out the article that I linked to in my original post.

I have to agree. When companies merge in mega- corps there’s all the hope of all the great things to come but hardly ever any follow through. Jobs are cut and creativity is squashed under bureaucracy and company protocol. If there’s an arms race in this scenario, it’s the arms race for yahoo. But that ended today when NewCorps publicly announced that they wouldn’t be competing with Microsoft for the acquisition. It’s only a matter of time and a matter of the sum Microsoft will produce before yahoo is just another “soft” company.
